GLENDALE, Calif.—The California Association of Private Postsecondary Schools (CAPPS) recently recognized North-West College (NWC) student Victoria Montano as the recipient of the 2020 Sue Fleming Memorial Scholarship. Open to allied health students at any CAPPS member school, the $3,500 award honors the late Sue Fleming’s nearly 20 years of service in the allied health sector.
“We are thrilled to have our very own Victoria Montano receive the Sue Fleming Memorial Scholarship!” explained NWC Glendale Campus Director Rick Hoke, who nominated Victoria for the scholarship. “She has worked incredibly hard throughout her Dental Assistant program and we are glad to see someone as deserving as Victoria receive this award.”
The memorial scholarship captures the legacy of Sue Fleming, who began her career in allied health in 1986 when she enrolled in a Medical Assisting certificate program at Western Career College. She became an Instructor at the school and then Department Chair. Sue continued to rise through the ranks, eventually taking on the role of Operations Director for the Central Valley campuses.
Sue was quick to offer encouragement to staff and students who were lagging in their studies and duties and always led by example. Those who knew her shared that she was the one person everyone knew had overcome challenges to get to the top—and she truly changed the lives of those she came into contact with.
“I would like to thank CAPPS for making me the recipient of the Sue Fleming Memorial Scholarship,” Victoria said. “As an adult trying to pursue a career, it means the world to me because this scholarship will help me complete my education—and I could not be more thankful.”
Victoria continued by sharing about how grateful she is for the Instructors and Team Members at North-West College as well. “Everyone here truly believes in every single one of us students and wants to see us achieve our goals,” she explained. “It’s been one of the best experiences I’ve ever had.”
