LONG BEACH, Calif.—The California Association of Private Postsecondary Schools (CAPPS) recently recognized North-West College (NWC) student Mary Smith as the recipient of the 2018 Norma Ford Memorial Scholarship. Open to nursing students at any CAPPS member school, the award honors the late Norma Ford’s more than 28 years of service in the private career school sector.
“It’s very exciting for us to have one of our own students win this award!” explained NWC Long Beach Campus Director Maggie Macias, who nominated Mary for the scholarship. “We are incredibly proud of how hard she has worked during her Vocational Nursing program and are glad to see someone as deserving as Mary receive this honor.”
The memorial scholarship carries on the legacy of Norma Ford, a longtime CAPPS Financial Aid Trainer, CAPPS Board Member, and one of the inaugural inductees into the CAPPS Hall of Fame in 2009. Norma was passionate about her work and a friend to many, earning respect nationwide for her financial aid expertise in the postsecondary sector. She left a lifelong positive impact on those who knew her.
“It is a privilege to have been chosen for this scholarship that honors Norma Ford,” Mary shared. “You have no idea how much this is going to help me in the future—I could not be more grateful for this head start.”
Mary went on to explain that she is also grateful for the Instructors at North-West College who are invested in seeing her succeed. “I greatly appreciate all the time and effort they have put into me—they are making sure I’m going to be the best nurse possible and that means so much.”
