The National Center for Education Statistics (NCES) is mandated by Congress to collect, analyze, and report information on the state of education in America. Located within the U.S. Department of Education, NCES conducts a national survey to gather information from postsecondary schools and colleges throughout the U.S. Known as the Integrated Postsecondary Education Data System (IPEDS), the survey is crucial to NCES’s ability to report accurate statistics related to American education, including student financial aid, student outcomes, retention, and others.
